cumsa bumps report 29/3/07 Thursday 29 March 2007 |

The 29th of March 2007 will forever be remembered in history for the first quadruple bump ever witnessed in Cambridge. Backed up by a spectacular performance at Soultree, Wong leapfrogged four established boats to take the Headship from S. Ho for the first time this year.

In her post-race interview she was all grins and told us:

"Soultree was really the turning point for me this year, everything just seemed to go perfectly that day and I feel a performance like that affords one a sense of confidence that I think was apparent in the way I rowed today."

Confidence may be a factor, but speaking to her coach and mentor J. Dorian later that day we learnt that there has also been a change in Wong's diet - perhaps her sterling exhibits these last two weeks are sufficient proof that gelato really is the new protein.

For the second week running, Nair put in a very poor showing and it is not farfetched to think there may be a tough battle for her to keep her right-to-race this year. Two no-shows from Tan and J. Ho allowed Hor to bump by default but an improvement in his position was expected given that this week's race was held on his own stretch of the river.

Q. Koh
was fortunate to row-over and sustained his standing on the river even though there was a pathetic effort on his part (almost telephonic one might say) but J. Lim was unable to capitalise on the situation - one bank party described his row as "feeble, he just didn't seem to be there on the river today" - and he found himself being bumped by Kuok who, along with B. Koh, made the most of Nair's embarrassment on the water.

Kuok,
the only person to achieve more than a singular bump this week, was seen eating chocolate-covered peanuts before and after the race and more recently we have seen a direct correlation between the amount of food brought to and consumed at the races by a boat and the positive morale of that boat (which has been found to be directly related to performance).

If every boat follows Kuok's example we are sure to have better performances on the river, but with concerns over weight and limitations of the monetary sponsorship given to crews will this ever be a reality?

We can only hope so.

share the fun Tuesday 27 March 2007 |

The holidays are here and I'm sure most of our esteemed members will fall into two groups: those who have been galumphing around the world and those who have chosen to savage Easter with a keen work ethic.

Nevertheless it is doubtless that you will all have done (or pondered) exciting things and I'm putting a shout out for your stories - not just to big yourself up with tales of your globe-trotting, to discuss something that has been bugging you or to enlighten your less medically inclined friends as to where exactly the medulla oblongata is, but also to contribute ideas on what to do (or what not to do as the case may be) with the obscene amount of time we get off each year.

In another life I would want to be a medic.

Just to sweeten the deal a little there will be a super-duper prize for the best article submitted during holidays (more information to follow soon) so let those creative juices flow and don't kid yourself that you'll have time to write anything next term because you won't. Go go go!

Send anything you have to: publicity@cumsa.org =)

insider report on cumsa meeting 17/3/07 Saturday 17 March 2007 |

And so it was at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon that the nine undergraduate members of the newly formed 07/08 CUMSA committee gathered for the first time as a complete entity - no longer missing a crucial man, as the role of publicity (read: saigang) had finally been appointed. It was really quite a meeting - an almost perfect one in fact, spearheaded by our president - with discussion, witty raillery and quality nibbles.

I lie.

At 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon, 7 members of the now complete committee met for their maiden meeting as a whole to confabulate about the crucial issues affecting our belovèd association.

It was only at 6:27 pm that Chief Hor and Mr. Koh decided to stroll into the meeting room - fashionably late, one might say, but making note of the fact that most of us had turned up from tennis and were dressed in naught but shorts and t-shirts and that it wasn't really an event per se, I think it is fair to say that they were simply just late and they subsequently both lost 10 CUMSA points for tardiness.

this Koh, the better one

Items shared during the meeting included (amongst many others) thoughts about the garden party, picnic plans, the possibility of deifying Xianjie for his wonderful services to CUMSA at the sports brunch, Shireen informing us she was going to "visit Purvis" when she got back, lurid gossip and the key issue of the night - "how best to care for your Raffles shirt so that it does not fade" (answer: only wear it when you go to sleep). We concluded with the (now customary) "Ode to Kenny" and skipped off happily to make use of our 10% discount at Jinling like all good members should.

But there was one problem we were unable to find a satisfactory solution to:

Is it really meant to be "Hand Brand"?

we love your chat Thursday 15 March 2007 |

Loving the keenness - we now have a tagboard!

Just click pull and you should see it - we appreciate all good banter - if you do visit and have any comments at all do let us know what you think by either posting on the latest entry or slipping us a message on the tagboard!

It was a night of drink, dance, debauchery (for some) and a crapload of fun - the penthouse of Soultree was completely packed, to the extent that a certain Publicity Officer was quite relieved he had chosen to just wear a wifebeater because "it was just so damn hot in there", and he was obviously using hot in the pulchritudinous sense of the word. I won't put it all down to beauty and our natural panache, but credit must be given to effort everyone put into dressing up - probably most evident in the fact that many people will have woken up this morning on an orange/yellow/red/blue/green pillow:

Or pink - note that Haihan's hair matches Kelly's headband...

Hair dye galore...

Simply amazing

Having said that the heat did get pretty intense and there was a twist-shake of drama that thankfully was dealt with before the smoke detectors began to buzz:

Fire hazard

The music was flowing all night - thanks to our selfless DJ (fueled by free drinks from the bartender who was clearly concerned about the flames emanating from his head) - and everybody had their own favourite dance moves:

There was even salsa:

The funny thing is that they paid to come and dance for us...

As expected there were a lot of candid moments too:

See? Debauchery. Censored to protect their identities...

Xianjie and Dexter had rather different reactions to the scene...

Yi-xun was inspired...

Darryl liked it.

Chris was shy about his ownership of two tickets to the guns show and wasn't keen on sharing.

Kenrick made a dignified appearance...

Ted was... Ted.

What the hell?

Kurt Ma was there...

and there...

and there...

A lot of great shots were taken throughout the night:

Ha haaaa...

But none of this would have been possible without the hard work of two people:

Our lovely events officer...

and erm... Ben Koh.

We also want to thank absolutely everyone who turned up - the atmosphere, attitude and participation truly made it a night to remember (or in some cases a night there will most definitely no memory of) and I'm sure everyone (even our President) will be eagerly looking forward to the next one.

Chief Hor of CUMSA (say it out loud and don't laugh)
